Long Eaton United saw their seven-match unbeaten run come to an end in a close-fought defeat to Worcester City on Saturday.

After a goalless first-half, Liam Lockett put the visiting side ahead before James Shaw brought the match level with his second goal in as many matches. Then, Felix Miles scored to put Worcester City back in front with 15 minutes left to play.

Defeat saw The Blues remain in fourth while City moved up a position to sixth place in the Northern Premier League Midlands table.

Brad Munn made one change to the side that beat Boldmere away on Tuesday. Evan Garnett returned from his injury at Walsall Wood several weeks ago while Liam Loughlan was named on the bench after several weeks away from the squad.

In a closely contested first-half that ended goalless neither side looked likely to break the stalemate.

Lockett looked lively for the visitors and forced Lewis King to make two strong saves to keep the score level.

James Shaw and James Taylor were a handful for the visitor’s defence in the opening 45 minutes but Haydn Whitcombe was not troubled in the Worcester City goal and the sides went into the break level.

The visitors flew out of the blocks after the restart and broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. King was forced off his line to make a clearance which Lockett intercepted out wide and lobbed the ball into the empty net.

However, less than two min minutes later Shaw equalised for The Blues from close-range after a low ball across the box from Owen Betts found the feet of the striker.

In an end-to-end conclusion to the match, King had to produce another couple of crucial stops to deny Taylor Towsend and Miles from point blank-range.

Moments later Miles managed to evade a slide tackle in the box and tucked the ball past King to restore the visitor’s lead in the 73rd minute.

Then, as the match came to a close, the referee brandished five yellow cards between the two teams in a stop-start, scrappy conclusion.
