After a goalless first-half at Grange Park, United took the lead in the 63rd minute – an own goal deflected into the Chesterfield net following a corner kick from Jack Rogers.
Then, with seconds left in the match, Rogers pounced on a mistake in the Chesterfield defence and slotted the ball into the empty net to double the advantage and ensure progress in the Cup.
The Quarter Finals of the County Cup will take place in the week commencing the 8th January 2024.
Brad Munn made three changes to the side that started against Royston Town at the weekend. Young midfielder Prestyn Moore returned to the starting eleven while Joseph Nyahwema started out wide and Marley Fearon began the match at centre half.
A youthful Spireites’ side looked lively from the first kick and had a chance to score an early opener. Fernando Tavares knocked the ball down for Thomas Marshall to strike but Riece Bertram blocked the effort inside the Long Eaton box.
Sam Hooper had a opportunity to shoot from distance moments later but it was catching practice for Blues number one Ross Durrant.
At the other end of the pitch a chance went begging for the hosts when Cieron Keane attacked down the left and flashed the ball across the Chesterfield six-yard box, just beyond the reach of James Spruce.
Midway through the first-half Spruce had another chance inside the 18-yard box after playing a quick one-two with Prestyn Moore but Spireites skipper Ryley D’Sena closed down the striker and stopped the shot.
After a goalless end to the first-half it was Chesterfield who had the first chance after the restart. Tavares weaved his way into the box but was never going to trouble Durrant shooting from a tight angle.
With 63 minutes played Long Eaton United broke the deadlock – Jack Rogers’ corner kick was met by the head of D’Sena who turned the ball into his own net to put The Blues ahead.
Chesterfield substitute James Simmonite almost brought the match level but his header was denied by the crossbar.
Aaron Cole came off the Long Eaton bench and had a chance at the near post which he flicked across an empty six-yard box.
With 93 minutes played Rogers tucked away the second goal of the match after a mix-up between the Chesterfield defence left the goal gaping. A poacher’s finish from the attacking midfielder to wrap up the win.
