Preview: Worksop Town (A)

Bradley White21 Jan 2023 - 01:30

Long Eaton travel to Sandy Lane on Saturday afternoon as they face league leaders Worksop Town.

The Blues go into the match on the back of a complete performance against Cleethorpes Town last weekend, when Jamie Walker’s brace inspired a 3-0 win and moved United up to 11th place.

The Opposition:

Worksop Town currently sit at the top of the NPL East Division on 59 points from 22 games. The Tigers would have a perfect record if not for a defeat to second place Stockton Town on the opening day. Since that loss, Worksop have smashed the club’s record and gone 21 matches without a loss.

A draw in their last match at home to 14th place Bridlington Town almost ended in defeat but for a 90th minute equaliser from Josh Wilde, which showed that the table topping Tigers still have the tenacity to grind out a result.

Manager’s Quotes:

“You want to test yourself against sides like that,” Long Eaton United manager Ian Deakin said ahead of Saturday’s match: “When they came here [to Grange Park], I felt like we should have got something out of the game, we missed two gilt-edged chances and a kind of freak goal goes in and we lose one-nil.”

Deakin reiterated his point. “You want to test yourself against good players and good sides, they are top of the league and obviously that was us last season - teams wanted to do that to us and I am sure the lads will be up for it.”

“We are under no illusion that it will be a tough task. We have a fantastic group of players and they’ve done remarkably well so far this season,” Deakin added: “these lads seem to play better when they are up against it or [when they are] playing a really, really good side and they seem to come to the party — so, I’m hoping that happens again this week.”

“We will go into the game like any other. We will go out there. Play our way. And try to win the game.”

Talking about the preparation for the match, Deakin said: “[We worked on a few things in training] I am never happy, I am always striving to be better, myself and the team.”

Mentioning the late substitutions against Cleethorpes, Deakin said: “It was nothing but a precaution. So, hopefully we will have a clean bill of health for the match.”
